STEEL ARCHED ARCADE Sammy Marks Square, Pretoria 1993 Two arcades lead into Sammy Marks Square in the city core — one from Prinsloo Street opposite the Reserve Bank site, and the other from Vermeulen street. They are covered with vault on steel arches spaced at 8 m with a total height of about 13 m. The flanges and web of the arches and legs are made up of flat steel because a hot rolled section of that size (400 x 200mm) could not be bent to the required radius. Roof purlins are tubular sections carrying the alternating corrugated acrylic roof sheets and prepainted corrugated steel sheets. Box gutters on both sides of the vault are large enough to double as walkways for inspection and cleaning. An access ladder leads to a walkway with handrail along the apex. All steel is grade 300W except for cold rolled sections, which are of commercial quality steel. Welding was restricted to the factory. Site connections are bolted. The steel was finished with an alkyd paint system. Hulle is bedek met 'n gewelf op staal boë teen 8 m gespasieer en ongeveer 13 m hoog. Die flense en web van die boë en bene is opgemaak van platstaal omdat 'n warmgewalste profiel van daardie grootte (400 x 200 mm) nie tot die verlangde radius gebuig kan word nie. Kaplatte is buisprofiele wat akriel en voorgeverfde staal golfdakplate om-en-om dra. Bakgeute weerskante van die gewelf is groot genoeg om as loopgange te dien vir inspeksie en skoonmaak. 'n Toegangsleer lei tot ‘n loopgang met handreling langs die nok. Alle staal is graad 300W behalwe vir koudgerolde profiele wat van kommersiële staal is. Sweiswerk is tot die fabriek beperk.
