1908 On 11 February 1908 the first students register for classes at Kya Rosa, Skinner Street, at the Pretoria Centre of the Transvaalse Universiteitskollege (TUK), initially as subjugate to the University of the Cape of Good Hope (UP 1960a:11-18)

1910 The TUK promulgated according to the 'Transvaalse Universiteits-Inlijvingswet, 1910' in the gazette of the Transvaal government on 17 May 1910 (UP 1960a:23-24), now one of eight colleges under the flagship of the University of the Cape of Good Hope (UP 1960a:25)

5 March 1929: Memorandum by Dr SFN Gie (Secretary for Education) to motivate that the training of architects and quantity surveyors should be a function of a university (and not a technical college). Subsequently, the two courses were moved to the TUK with the understanding that training would take place in collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand, but offered on both campuses (UP 1960a:142)

18 April 1929: Courses in architecture and quantity surveying initiated at TUK with the appointment of H BELL-JOHN as head and part-time professor (UP 1960a:142)

1930 10 October 1930: An act of Parliament – championed by General Jan Smuts – gave rise to the name TUC becoming the University of Pretoria. At the time the University had more than 900 students, making it the largest tertiary institution in the country at the time (Artefacts)

The department is housed in the Student Union Clubhouse (Klubsaal); architect Gerard MOERDYK. The first level was completed in 1930 and the second level only in 1936 (Artefacts)

1931 First course in architecture starts at UP (UP 1987:67)

Negotiations between the University of Pretoria, University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the board of the Institute of South African Architects and the Chapter of South African Quantity Surveyors, leading to the decision at the end of that year that, from 1932, Pretoria would offer the quantity surveying degrees and Wits those in architecture (UP 1960a:142-143)

Eight students enrol for the new four year degree in Landscape Architecture (BL) and one student for the postgraduate degree, namely BA (Ben) FARRELL, later professor, who obtained his ML in 1974 (UP 1987:68)

1972 During the winter of 1972 the construction work on Boukunde caused considerable disruptions. Studios of third and fourth year students were temporarily relocated to a shed on a farm near the current Ifafi (east of Hartbeespoort Dam) owned by Lincoln Schoeman; students and lecturers (amongst them Dieter HOLM and Carl (Gus) GERNEKE) were transported there daily by bus. One of the projects undertaken there included the redesign of the farm as a suburb, a project later completed by Prof Charles Viljoen (not affiliated to the Department), who also presented lectures here (DH)

1973 In September 1973 ILASA hosts environmental congress in Pretoria: "Planning for Environmental Conservation" with prominent speakers including John Oldham, Hans F Werkmeister, Roberto BURLE-MARX and Ian McHARG. The conference was instrumental in bringing environmental issues to the attention of the public and government and would later have a huge influence on the Environmental Conservation Act (Breedlove & Young 2002:2-3)

Department of Architecture at the University of Pretoria implements a punch-card system to index and retrieve information from architectural journals that would evolve into TOBi (Trefwoordestelsel vir die Ontsluiting van Boukundige inligting / Keyword System for the Retrieval of Architecture and Building Science Information) under lecturer Hans WEGELIN. Articles from 93 international and South African journals were indexed over the years to enable users to access information on architects, buildings, building materials and methods, design theory, urban design, and much more (KvN; Maritz 2003:24-25)

The student organisation Boukundige Studentevereniging splits into three separate organisations, leading to the founding of the Argitektuurstudentevereniging, Boubestuurstudentevereniging and Bourekenkundestudentevereniging. GAP (Groep Argitekte Pretoria) already exists and is affiliated with the ISAA (UP 1987:321)

1975 Dr Anton Rupert (Rembrandt Group) approaches Landscape Architecture at UP to complete a masterplan for Graaff-Reinet. Project was completed by W VAN RIET assisted by G Minnaar (architecture student) and in collaboration with staff from the Departments of Architecture and Town and Regional Planning (Breedlove & Young 2002:4)

Design Theory is introduced as a separate subject stream and presented to first year students for the first time (Fisher & Le Roux 1993:24)

BArch course contents extended and reorganised (including new module of Design Theory). Prerequisites for promotion and graduating with distinction are set higher. Theory of Structures from now on presented to separate groups, especially architecture students, where it was previously presented to three programmes simultaneously: architecture, quantity surveying and construction management. Civil Engineering takes responsibility for Structures for the first time. Supplementary examinations (except for first semester of first year) are discontinued (Kemp 1991:23)

1988 Willem VAN RIET appointed as Professor and Head of Department of Landscape Architecture on 1 January 1988 (Van Riet 1989:1)

Prof Willem VAN RIET receives the first doctoral degree from the Department of Landscape Architecture (Van Riet 1989:1). Rest of the staff consists of BA FARRELL (associate Professor), 3 senior lecturers (CCC MEINTJES, K FOURIE and Graham YOUNG) and two research officers (JD Janse van Rensburg and S Slabbert) (UP 1996:225)

1994 Division for Environmental Design and Management gains official status when the Senate approves a regulation in this regard. Prof HM SIGLÉ (Head of Department of Quantity Surveying) designated as first director of the division (UP 2002a:192)

Special edition of Architecture SA (January + February 1994) devoted to the Department’s golden jubilee – see 1993.

"Directly after the establishment of the first full South African Democracy, a representative of the department, Roger FISHER, was granted observer status at the 14th General Assembly of the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) held in Mauritius in April 1994. While in progress, news came through of South Africa's re-admission to the Commonwealth and arrangements were immediately made for the international accreditation of the professional degree course in Architecture. A joint visit of the South African Council of Architects (SACA) and CAA was arranged for September of that year and so the Pretoria School of Architecture was the first school in South Africa under the new political dispensation to achieve international recognition, and in terms of an agreement negotiated by SACA with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), was also accredited by RIBA in 1995." Environmental Potential Atlas (ENPAT) project initiated from the GIS-lab in the Department of Landscape Architecture (see 1991). Contract research for The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) worth R1 million annually starts (Breedlove & Young 2002:4)

Fourth year landscape architecture students design three parks in Atteridgeville as community participation project. City Council was persuaded to implement the parks (Urban Green File Supplement 2002:13)

UP changes language policy to dual medium instruction with Afrikaans and English (Wegelin 2005:91)

Braam DE VILLIERS (BArch 1994) becomes the first UP student to win the Corobrik National Architectural Student of the Year 1994 award (and R10,000; announced March 1995) with his thesis project 'A city market for Bosman Street Station' (Architect & Builder 1995:25)

It was agreed to confer the first honorary doctorate in Landscape Architecture by UP on the internationally renowned ecologist and designer, Prof Ian McHarg, who unfortunately passed away before the degree could be conferred (Artefacts)

One day workshop for Grade 11 learners from LG Holele High School (Ga-Rankuwa) and Eersterust Secondary School (Eersterust) hosted by Department in conjunction with PIA; organised by Finzi SAIDI and senior students (EBIT-brief 2001:18)

National Architectural Student's Congress (themed CauseWay) hosted by UP, Technikon Pretoria and Technikon North Gauteng in Pretoria; organised by UP student Trevor LOVELL (BSc(Arch) 2002), it was held from 1 to 5 October 2001 (EBIT-brief 2001:21)

Academic Information Service (library) establishes access to TOBi (see 1973, 1981, 1996) and it is renamed ArchUP (Maritz 2003:25)

Third year architecture student Minette STEYN (BSc(Arch) 2001) wins the first prize in the design competition of the South African Institute for Steel Construction with her design for a tensile structure titled 'Inspiring Flight' (NEWS)

Fourth year architecture student Michael DENNET (MArch(Prof) 2002) wins competition for the design of a kiosk sponsored by the Gauteng Provincial Government aimed at local conditions and job creation (NEWS)

Jaco BOOYENS (BArch 1996) is first UP graduate to be awarded the prestigious SAIA bi-annual Rome scholarship to study at the British School in Rome. The two other finalists were also UP graduates: Carla DE BEER (BArch 1999) and Eugene DA SILVA-MOREIRA (BArch 1999) (NEWS)

Programme in Landscape Architecture celebrates 30th anniversary with:

Prof Schalk W. LE ROUX (HoD) awarded Medal of Honour by the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (South African Academy for Science and Arts) on 26 September 2002 for his contribution to the promotion of architecture (SAAWK 2002:7)

Prof Thys SIGLÉ retires from UP as Chairman of the School for the Built Environment (NEWS)

On Thursday 10 August 2006 the Qb Awards for South African Interior Design were presented at a gala event at Gallagher Estate. In the student category, three of the four finalists were students from the Programme in Interior Architecture, Department of Architecture at the University of Pretoria. The overall winner of this category was Sureen UYS (BSc(Int) 2005). The other two finalists from the Department were Stephanie VAN DYK (MInt(Prof) 2005) and Lorinda BEZUIDENHOUT (BSc(Int) 2005) (NB)

2011 Upgrading of the Department's CAD laboratory completed on 7 April 2011: full replacement of 35 PC-workstations with 50 Apple MC508 iMac 21.5", new chairs, antistatic floor and other new finishes, an audio visual system and A4 & A3 colour/black and white Xerox printers (LP)

Jankel Nieuwoudt, currently enrolled for MArch(Prof) declared winner in the sustainability section of the 2010 DesignHub Respond-Renew-Revitalise Competition, sponsored by Saint Gobain, with his project 'Serving the City – The Carlton Centre as mechanism for change in urban Johannesburg'. Jankel won R10,000. Five students from UP reached the final stage and presented their proposals to the adjudication panel on 22 February 2011. Prof Piet VOSLOO was named best lecturer to participate in the competition and the Department was named best university participant, earning a prize of R60,000.00 (NB)

Ruann VAN DER WESTHUIZEN's (MArch(Prof) 2009) thesis project (A public bathhouse) announced as one of the final eight winners of the Hunter Douglas Awards at the biannual Archiprix International competition at the award ceremony held on 9 June 2011 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Ruann's project was also nominated as a participant’s favourite. (Archiprix International 2011)
