Abstract: When assessing the architectural merits of the Union Buildings the design thinking of Herbert Baker should be considered. He expressed himself on these matters in various texts throughout his productive years. Not all of these have been available to the critic. This article attempts to make his thinking available to the critic and researcher, especially in terms of applying the tenets of the Grand Manner, as well as abortive aspects of the design, particularly as regards the proposed Temple of Peace and Via Sacra. |
