In secret the lepers made this boat to take them to the mainland and freedom. It was discovered by the authorities and destroyed.
Note: The Faure Pier is distinctly visible along the horizon line. This photograph was presumably taken pre-WW1 as the rhythm and lighter visual 'weight' of the structural system suggests that it is constructed of wood.

Faure Pier with the parcels office on the right. The parcels were all inspected before they were handed to the patients. The authorities attempted to prevent the smuggling of dagga and liquor but they never really succeeded.
Note the parallel line of the mule trolley rail running the length of the pier.
