R1 Houses of Parliament, Cape Town The laying of the foundation-stone of the building designed by Charles Freeman took place on 12 May 1875. Serious building problems, however, necessitated the alteration of the original plans and the present building was completed in 1884 according to the design altered by a certain Greaves.
