FOR ALL THE PEOPLE OF CAPE TOWN
WITHOUT IN ANY WAY DIRECTING THE UNIVERSITY
TO DO SO, I HOPE IT WILL FIND IT POSSIBLE TO UTILISE
THIS BEQUEST FOR THE PURPOSE OF DEVELOPING
AND CULTIVATING THE ARTS. THIS COULD, I AM
SATISFIED, BEST BE DONE BY ESTABLISHING A THEATRE
IN CAPE TOWN IN WHICH PLAYS, OPERAS, BALLETS,
CONCERTS AND OTHER FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT
CAN BE GIVEN. I BELIEVE THE UNIVERSITY IS THE
BODY BEST FITTED TO UNDERTAKE THIS WORK. IT IS,
AND SHOULD BE THE CENTRE AND GUIDE OF THE
INTELLECTUAL LIFE AND ACTIVITY OF THE COMMUNITY
AND MY DESIRE IS THAT ITS INFLUENCE SHOULD BE
PERMANENTLY ESTABLISHED AND EXTENDED.
EXTRACT FROM THE WILL OF W. DUNCAN BAXTER,
WHOSE GIFT MADE THIS PROJECT POSSIBLE
