ANDREW GEDDES BAIN EXPLORED THE KLOOF IN 1846
AND COMMENCED CONSTRUCTION OF THIS HIGHWAY
TO THE NORTH IN 1849. THE PASS REVEALS BAIN'S
TECHNOLOGICAL SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE OF GEOLOGY.
WORK WAS DONE BY CONVICTS. CONSTRUCTION WAS
COMPLETED IN 1853.
