The Old Potchefstroom Gaol, Potchefstroom

This gaol was, in fact, the fourth to be built in Potchefstroom. Potchefstroom’s first gaol was built on the old Market Square in Retief Street in 1847. Its ineffectiveness resulted in the second gaol to be built at the corner of River and Potgieter Street in May 1863. The third gaol was constructed between 1974 and 1976 [sic 1874 and 1876] on the western side of the town.

Work started on the fourth gaol in 1898. The gaol consisted of four sections, as well as a house and a hospital. Since November this gaol has been used as the headquarters of the Potchefstroom Commando.

(Notice inside – see photograph)

The building is currently (2013) the Tlokwe Youth Centre for Excellence.
