Built into the rocks on the slopes of the Diamantberg, this extravagant "diamond palace" was erected 1909-1910 (during the height of the diamond boom) as a residence for its original owner and occupant, Hans Goerke, after whom it is named. Consolidated Diamond Mines(CDM) purchased the house in 1920, sold it to the South West Africa Administration in 1944 when it became the MAGISTRATE'S RESIDENCE until 1981, then repurchased it in 1983 for use as a corporate guesthouse. Today, the house owned by NAMDEB Diamond Corporation (formerly CDM), is open to the public.
