Click to view map Coordinates: | The following information was sent to us by Anver Sedan who has been busy doing research for the last ten years. There has always been oral history in their family that they are the descendants of the Bainskloof kramat from his son Imam Sadan Sulaiman. He has some proof and oral history "We the Sadan, Sedan, Slamang, family with families that also connect to the named surnames had a gathering at their forefather's kramat Sheikh Sulaiman on the 03 March 2019". He gives here a short history of the Bainskloof Kramat of Sheikh Sulaiman. History of Sheikh Sulaiman buried in Bainskloof Pass Oral history is that Sheikh Sulaiman buried in Bainskloof Pass came from Makkah, Arabia with his wife Sabbarrah. His father , Sheikh Abduragman Sadan and his mother, Gadijah, along with his grandfather Sheikh Sadan Sulaiman and some companions came from Makkah to the Cape. After they were banished from Makkah and the whole of Arabia by the Wahhabi movement, they travelled until they came to the Cape and stayed here to help improve Islam. His lineage was from the family that practiced the Alawi Tariqah and a Sayed a title of respect given to descendants of Fatima, daughter of our noble Prophet Nabi Muhammad (SAW). After his death in Bainskloof Pass in the 1850's his son, Imam Sadan Sulaiman, moved to Worcester in 1875 where he became Worcester's first Imam and built the masjied to be near the burial place of his father. Other oral reports says that Imam Sadan Sulaiman the first Imam of Worcester was the son of Sheikh Sulaiman buried in Bainskloof Pass and that his real name was actually Sheikh Sulaiman Abduragman, the son of Sheikh Abduragman Sadan. Oral history proves to be true and supported by archival information. Sheikh Sulaiman Abduragman born in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Parents: Sheikh Abduragman Sadan and Gadijah. Married to: Sabbarrah. Children: Twin sons, Imam Sadan Sulaiman and Abdulla Sulaiman born at the Cape of Good Hope. Son Abdulla Sulaiman born 1819 and passed away on 28 January 1885 buried in Constantia Cape Town Western Cape at the age of 65. Abdulla Sulaiman was married to Jainap and they had 8 children Sulaiman, Oesman, Galima, Mogamad, Kareema, Magmoed, Yusuf and Gadijah. Son Imam Sadan Sulaiman, born in 1819 and passed away 8 June 1888 was buried near East London in the Eastern Cape at the age of 69. First Imam of Worcester 1875 - 1881. Imam Sadan Sulaiman was married to 3 wives, after the death of each wife he remarried. With his first wife Sophia Freudje he had 3 children namely: Imam Mogamad Sadan, Sulaiman Jounie (also known as Shamsudeen Sleming) Sietie Salama Bhyat (neé Sadan), Sulaiman Sadan and Maimoena Slamang. With his second wife Lylla Wentzel he had about 14 children only a few were known Ghairaatie Kafaar (neé Sadan), Fatima Railoen (neé Sadan), Galima Variawa ( neé Sadan), Gadijah Desai (neé Sadan) and Magmoed Sadan. Imam Mogamad Sadan, son of Imam Sadan Sulaiman and the grandchild of Sheikh Sulaiman, was born in 1841 and died 8 on April 1923 and was buried in Worcester Muslim cemetery in the Western Cape at the age of 81. He was the second Imam of Worcester and served as Imam for over 40 years. Oral history of Imam Mogamad Sadan is that a Christian man came to Imam Mogamad Sadan telling him that he can't find the Sheikh that's living near Brandvlei (a small village on the border of Worcester) and when he was tired of searching for the Sheikh he wanted to drink water from the pond but something pushed his hand away from drinking the water. He was frightened and ran to fetch Imam Mogamad Sadan and told the Imam what had happened. The Imam went with him to the pond and when they got there, Imam told him to drink the water again and again the same thing happened his hand got pushed away. The Imam then told him the Sheikh has passed away and body was in the water. Imam Mogamad Sadan buried this Sheikh in the water in Brandvlei. Today that area where the pond is, is known as the Brandvlei Kramat near Worcester. According to oral history the Sheikh buried there was one of the descendants of one of the companions of Sheikh Sulaiman that came with him from Makkah, Arabia to the Cape. Other Oral history within the family indicates that Al-Sayed al-Sheik Sulaiman Abduragman was Imam of the Haram in Makkah and was banished from Saudi Arabia for speaking against the first King of Saudi Arabia about his unjust rule. Al-Sayed al-Sheik Sulaiman Abduragman decided to spread authentic Islam and left Saudi Arabia to Portugal, from Portugal he travelled to Java/Indonesia, and from there to Uitenhage near Port Elizabeth, and from PE to Cape Town. In Cape Town Al-Sayed al-Sheik Sulaiman Abduragman met Tuan Guru and decided to stay and help improve the education of Islam in Cape Town. We have no proof of this, only data from oral history which was told for more than 7 generations in the Sadan family. Similar oral history was told in the Slamang family and this data confirms that Al-Sayed al-Sheik Sulaiman Abduragman's father or grandfather was Imam of the Haram in Makkah. A letter in the Bhyat family of Johannesburg indicates that the family originated from Medina. Sietie Salama Bhyat nee Sadan wrote a letter in the 1960s to Sayed Ghazi Bhafaqi living in Saudi Arabia (Medina) regarding her father Imam Sadan Sulaiman and Grandfather Sheikh Sulaiman. Sayed Ghazi then sent the letter back to Surat/India where she was living, confirming that her family originated from Medina and are Sayeds through Imam Hussain. Sietie Salama Bhyat died in 1970 at age of 118 in India. Oral history from Sietie Salama Bhyat nee Sadan regarding her father that is buried outside Worcester on a Mountain slope, referring to the Bainskloof Kramat. Her grandchild Boeta Salek Mongratie has indicated that she has mistaken the Kramat, as it was not her father's grave, but her grandfather's grave. Because of old age she mistook the information, as her father had died in the harbour of East London on a ship/steamer in 1888. The oral history of the Sadan family – Sheik Sulaiman died in Bainskloof in 1859, his son Imam Sadan Sulaiman moved to Worcester and built the first Mosque in Worcester. The title deed of the Mosque in Worcester dates back to 22 December 1859, the application was finally approved by the government on 15 April 1861, the Mosque was finally built and it was completed on 9 May 1878. The death notice of Imam Abdullah Sulaiman, twin brother of Imam Sadan, indicates their father was Sulaiman of Arab descent. According to scrolls they are direct descendants of Sufi Master Sayyidi Ahmed al-Kabir al-Rifai.
