The Carnegie Library situated at the corner of Van Riebeeck Street and Van Riebeeck Avenue is currently vacant and somewhat dilapidated. It is an L shaped building, with the wing possibly serving as the library office. The buttresses on either side of the central window, together with the roof molding above the pediment gives the building an ecclesiastical appearance, which undoubtedly was the architect’s intention. Above the entrance appears the proud legend ‘Carnegie Gebou 1909’. (SJ de Klerk for The Heritage Portal, Friday, September 24, 2021) |
