The Johannesburg afternoon newspaper 'Die Vaderland' announced on 10 November 1938 that the newspaper had formed 'Die Vaderlandse Voortrekker Strandfonds' organization with the aim of providing children of poor parents the opportunity to enjoy a holiday at the beach. In August 1942 the Board of Directors of the 'Afrikaanse Pers' Ltd. purchased a beach resort at Glenmore on the Natal south coast. This was after [the architect] Geurt Geers visited the place with OJ Bekker and LJ Erasmus as representatives of the Press and found it so ideal that the company bought it for £13 500. There were already buildings that could be used for camping purposes but in 1944 the company decided to begin with a few of the main buildings of the seaside resort as planned in co-operation with Geers. The first group of buildings consisted of a hospital, a dining room, four sleeping cabins and the laundry.

A festive inauguration of the buildings was planned for 31 May 1947 but it was a memorable event that the architect was unable to attend. On the morning of 21 February 1945, when he had visited Glenmore yet again, he went swimming with a friend. Unexpectedly his friend heard him say, "Help me, please!" Though he was soon taken out of the water, despite all efforts to resuscitate him, they found that he was already dead. Apparently he did not drown, rather his heart gave in while in the water. In 'n Volk staan op uit sy as (die verhaal van die Afrikaanse Pers Ltd) (1962), LJ Erasmus writes: "For anyone who knew the gifted seeker of beauty of form and in friendship and human relations, it was a sad loss, while the 'Strandfonds' regretted that he could not see the completion of a pleasing future dream."
