The first bank that opened was a branch of Standard Bank in 1876, but in an older building. Sandstone building, erected in 1923 by the Standard Bank for a total cost of £3 036. The owners were very pleased with the beautiful building and its imposing front door. The bank closed when Volkskas (now ABSA) opened in 1956 due to pressure from the Afrikaans community. It was later an Attorney's office but is currently (2015) standing empty.
