Click to view map Coordinates: | The Randburg Taxi Rank was commissioned by the City of Johannesburg. Urban studies carried out to select a site, involved public controversy. 100's of taxis together with the traders had saturated the central business areas of Randburg. The desire to rid the CBD of this intrusion had to be balanced by the need for the most central place for a pedestrian clientele. The location selected is adjacent to the municipal offices and to shops and is served by major local roads and bus routes, maximizing access. The Taxi Rank, serves both local and national destinations and, originally designed for 1200 taxis, simulates the character and buzz of a main-line rail station. Numbers of taxis has since expanded. Well researched traffic studies ensured safe and efficient vehicular movement. Passenger movement is 'filtered' through generous informal trading facilities, with food outlets and, together with large public rest rooms the whole complex has enjoyed considerable success, the Taxi Rank created a Model for the province.
