BLOCKHOUSE
This Blockhouse, dating back to 1901,
is an example of the earliest design
of the British Blockhouse in
South Africa and one of five
built around Barberton.
During the South African War
(formerly known as the
Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902)
It was manned by the Town Guard
and served as protection against
Boer forces for the
Concentration Camp and Hospital.
No shot was ever fired from
the Blockhouse
This Blockhouse
is the only surviving fort of this
early design and was declared a
National Monument
on 6 February 1978.
It is now a Provincial Heritage Site. | |
