Two large recumbent lions were designed as integral components of the High Court precinct in Lusaka, placed on either side of the broad entrance approach stair on the southwest side of the High Court, The two lions were manufactured by LUPINI BROTHERS - who had a yard in Lusaka where they did precast concrete casting and terrazzo work. The lions were cast in a white terrazzo with a bush-hammered finish. Apart from the two lions, the Lupini's also cast the giant order columns, the external door architraves and the window surrounds - all in a white terrazzo. The two lions were apparently jointly sculpted by Gigi Lupini (sen.) and an artist called F. Anghileri. They were cast in the ground as the mould was too big to handle above ground, being over 2m long. As was usual at the time, Emilio Lupini arranged that each lion was cast with an internal "time capsule" comprising a sealed bottle with a newspaper of the day and pieces of the local currency, from the smallest to the largest. Gigi and Emilio Lupini were assisted by Preto, an Italian stone mason working for Lupini Brothers at the time.
