The mosque is the oldest in the city of Port Elizabeth and was erected to serve the growing Muslim community who previously had to travel to Uitenhage for Friday prayers. Apparently the project ran out of funds about halfway through construction and was only able to be completed through the generosity of the Sultan of Turkey.
