"...it was only in 1924 that more than 200 houses in this area, referred to as the "condemned area", 89 were identified for demolition. These houses stood on the site required for the new power station. The first phase of the main power facility was opened on 24 March 1927. Although initially spared, the St Patrick's Church was demolished in 1954 to make room for cooling towers."
