The land was first granted to George Daniel Diesel in 1824. A house was later constructed on the site for Captain Edward Wallace in about 1832. This was a simple double storey house with veranda and balcony on the main face facing the street. It is unclear if the current building incorporated the original house or not. While it is possible that the new house extended the original forward and provided a new front elevation, this not indicated on the proposed plans for the house. (Gerald Humphrey, September 2017)
