Engraved inscription on rectangular brass plate with steel frame:

H. J. Swart, 'n gewese burger-
meester van die dorp.

The stones for the erection of this monument during the Symbolic
Great Trek in 1938 were brought by the inhabitants of the town
and district.

The Old Mill-stone on top was used at the French Mission Station
at Beersheba in the district in 1835.

The four corner stones were taken from the old Voortrekker road
over Kareenek near the town.
The wheel was donated by Mr. H. J. Swart, a former Mayor
of Smithfield.
