Also known as Jozini Dam or Lake Jozini.

This is a double-curvature single-arch concrete dam of maximum 89 meters above its lowest foundation, the second largest such structure, built across the Phongola River, at the eastern end of the narrow gorge separating the Lebombo and Ubombo ranges, as an irrigation dam for the Makatini Flats of Kwa-Zulu Natal. It has both controlled and uncontrolled spillways. At the time of its construction it was South Africa's largest dam. It was the first dam in South Africa to be constructed using artificial pre-cooling of the aggregate as well as the adding of ice to the concrete mix during construction.

Its construction flooded portion of the then first formally recognised conservation area in Africa, the Pongola Game Reserve, proclaimed in 1894 by the then President of the Transvaal Republic, Paul Kruger. It is now flanked by private wildlife reserves as well as the Pongola Game Reserve.
