Coordinates:

Built on the Mgeni River in Kwa-Zulu Natal for purposes of supplying potable water to Pietermaritzburg and other areas of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The dam wall design is of interest in that it is a composite concrete gravity and earth-fill construction designed to abstract water of desired quality at different levels of the dam and release this into the river. The wall is 55 metres at height above lowest foundation and has an uncontrolled spillway located in the central mass-concrete section.
