Women in Architecture - I am Architect: SAIA News. 12 August 2019. PROJECT SUMMARY The Early Childhood Development Centre was designed to create a legible, stimulating space using light and colour in an environment where a young child can learn, play and move safely. By simplifying, the previous prototype, a row of classrooms was created on the northern facade of the building and the clustering of administrative functions on either side of the courtyard, creating a safe playing area directly accessible to the children. The entrance designed as alight tower that, when lit, acts as a landmark in the township. A translucent polycarbonate wall was created - filling its cavity with colourful pond-balls to create a luminous effect. A distinct and playful boundary wall along the street front brings a sense of identity and playfulness to the township. Within the building, high volumes define the public spaces. The central passage is defined by skylights that allow shafts of light to penetrate into the depth of the building. Colour is a fundamental part of the design of the building and is used as means of way-finding through the various spaces. Each classroom is allocated a vibrant colour, allowing the space to be easily recognised by children. Artwork was created through a process of collaboration with local artists.
