Various trek passes and sheep trails linked Middelpos through the Roggeberg to the Tanqua Karoo. In 1895 the local divisional council of Middelpos started construction of the pass but work ceased when the money ran out. Bob Bromley of the Public Works Department inspected these works and declared them "unsatisfactory and done in an extravagant manner" and abandoned them and resurveyed the route. Works commenced in 1896. A labour force of seventy men was employed but this dwindled as work proceeded. All the construction is of dry packed stone and fill without any use of cement (Whitehead, 2018:14-15).
