East London Harbour : Malan Memorial
East London, Eastern Cape

Date:n.d.
Type:Memorial
Style:Cape Dutch Revival
Status:Demolished

The CW MALAN Memorial in the East London Port was erected to commemorate the opening of the CW Malan Turning Basin. Malan was Minister of Railways and Harbours from 1924 to 1935.

Construction of the Turning Basin commenced in 1930 and in 1935 the sluice gates were opened to allow water in. The Grantully Castle was then able to turn in the new basin and dock. Previously, such vessels had to come into the Port backwards.

The memorial was demolished to construct the Container terminal on the East Bank.
