It was the fourth mosque to be built in South Africa, and the first outside Cape Town. The first three mosques in Cape Town were: the Auwal Mosque (1809-1814) in the Bo-Kaap, the Palm Tree Mosque (c.1825) in Long Street, and the Nurul Islam Mosque (1844) in the Bo-Kaap.
