Out of the twelve War Memorial Cottages that were originally planned in Northmead in 1920, only four remain - two on the corner of 5th Avenue and 4th Street and the other two on the corner of 4th Street and 4th Avenue. The Cottage Scheme was originated by the Benoni Branch of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTHS) who felt that a permanent Memorial should be erected in memory of the Benoni Soldiers who died during the Great War. The cottages were intended to accommodate widows of fallen soldiers. The Benoni Town Council granted the stands for the purpose, and local Mines, the Benoni Chamber of Commerce and other organisations contributed towards this scheme. The granite foundation stone was presented by the Architect, Mr. W.J. Sloan. It bears the following inscription in polished letters on a roughened backdrop with polished frame: BENONI WAR MEMORIAL COTTAGES. THIS STONE WAS LAID BY THE RIGHT HON-LIEUT-GENL. J.C. SMUTS, PC PRIME MINISTER OF THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA OCTOBER 6TH 1920. The inscription was bounded by an acknowledgement in each corner to the following four persons: W J SLOAN M.A.T.A. ARCHITECT W. J. CLEMO. CONTRACTOR. W. LLEWELLYN MORGAN. PRESIDENT. W. C . GRIFFITHS. HON. SECY & TREASR. The contractor. Mr. W.J. Clemo graciously gave a silver trowel.
