The elaborate gate to these sports grounds were built in 1952 for the tricentennial commemoration of Jan van Riebeeck's landing at the Cape in 1652. The grounds were originally known as 'Die Parade' (The Parade) and hosted the rugby club, the athletics club and the Swellendam Agricultural Show. The show was eventually moved to its current location between Station, Murray and Somerset Streets as, it is said, the rugby club and athletics club were becoming somewhat disenchanted with having to play on a pitch littered with animal dung.
