Formerly Department of Internal Affairs

On 1968 05 08 the firm BSCC were commissioned by the then Department of Internal Affairs to design a new head office. This building was to reflect the the status of the Department in contemporary form while complying with the HOLFORD Plan for the State Boulevard among which the building was to be located. A specific requirement was that there be efficiency of movement of files (some 24 000 per day) and personnel and good connectivity between the computer centre and offices. Security of the files stored there as well as personnel and visitors was of the utmost importance.

What was designed was a 31 storey deep-space office building, comprising a podium with cafeteria with basement parking (192 vehicles) and storage and 28 storey tower-block with a central concrete core having square-planned reinforced concrete floor plates serviced at the perimeter by vertical service ducts rising across the entire height of the facades.

The schedule of planning was as follows:
1968 07 30 - completion of sketch plans
1968 10 01 - commencement of excavations
1969 05 01 - commencement of the erection of the podium
1970 05 01 - commencement of the erection of the tower block.
197? - [Occupation?]. In 2009 the entire periphery was uniformly glazed in a glass and aluminium curtain wall.

In 2021 the building was declared a health risk due to fire risk and poor ventilation and shut for use.
