Click to view map Coordinates: | Located within the grounds of St Stithians College. The St Stithians Chapel was designed by William J. “Bill” Carter and finished construction in November of 1954, with the addition of a Foundation Stone on the rear chapel wall, initially laid on the 11th August 1953, describing the fulfilment of establishing the college in the name of the Methodist Church. The Chapel, along with the Mike Roberts Outdoor Chapel, is situated at the end of the school, following parallel to the other buildings on the college grounds. This placement of the chapel at the end of the school is purposely done to symbolize the guidance towards God throughout one’s time spent at Saints. The use of stained-glass windows, designed and installed by artist Paul Blomkamp in 1991, gives the design a resemblance to gothic architecture. Within the apse, a large Good Samaritan window acts as a focal point drawing attention to the front of the chapel and the pulpit. Large pipe organs are situated on both sides of the apse and were initially in the, now demolished, Mayfair West Dutch Reformed Church and was constructed in Holland. Other small enhancements have been made to the chapel over the years, which include the gallery above the entrance of the chapel and the choir stalls, added in 1999. (Stefan Mollema, July 2021) |
