The Cala prison or "lockup" as it was originally called, was designed and built by the Public Works Department of the Cape Colony in about 1888 - 1890, under the supervision of District Inspector Joseph Newey, while the nearby Cala stone arch bridge was being built. (William Martinson, July 2021)
