Koetservlei / Lismore
Suurbraak district, Western Cape

Date:1750s : 1870s
Type:Farmhouse
Style:Cape Vernacular : Cape Dutch
Status:Extant
Street:R324

The original owner J Coetser was granted the land as a loan farm in 1746, from whence the original farm name. It was later acquired by John Hamilton Hodgson in the time of British rule, who bred horses there for the British East India Company. Hodgson married Maria Barry, daughter of Joseph Barry, whose descendants have lived and still reside as seventh generation farmers. The main building comprises a long central section with two browed gables, one over the entrance - the older - and another matched to the left, probably of later date, all under Cape-reed thatching. Two additional cross wings were added as stoepkamers in the 1870s fronted by straight dormer gables. An original stable and smithy was razed by fire in recent times and replaced with a contemporary structure on the old footprint.
