| When Payens was commissioned to design a church for a new diocese of Maseru, Lesotho, the choice for the use of local sandstone was economic and contextual. Completed in 1955, this church was elevated to Our Lady of Victories Catholic Cathedral in 1961. The articulation of the cathedral’s towers resonates strongly with the post-war architecture in the Netherlands, where precast geometric concrete elements were applied for graphic effect and cost reduction.
