JOHANNESBURG CITY HERITAGE
GLENEAGLES
Gleneagles is a notable example of the work of architects
JC Cook & Cowen who were responsible for a number of
important residential building commissions during the
inter-war period. Their work is characterised by the generous
proportions of the spacious apartments, reflecting their striking
use of utilitarian design and Art Deco detail. The Art Deco
features of the Entrance Hall are amongst the finest in
Johannesburg. This scale and quality was made possible
by the boom in Johannesburg's fortunes and economic
recovery, post the 1930s depression. Built in stages,
the final section of Gleneagles was
completed in 1937.
