ABRAMOWITCH, PINSHOW and SCHNEIDER: Architect
Harold A SCHNEIDER: Design Architect

Date:n.d.

Designed by Schneider for himself.

"It is said that the best way for an architect to satisfy himself that his theories are correct is to live in one of his own creations. In this house, contemporary theory and some very human desires determined the architect's approach to the design.

"The house, which is orientated north, has been freely planned in accordance with contemporary principles.

"As the site was not unduly limited it was possible to orientate the house to take advantage of solar planning. To reduce glare, an attempt was made to equalise internal and external light intensity by having large window areas.

"A colour-wasbed brick exterior, screen walls and steel points of support, constitute the structural alphabet of the house. On this basis a simple and effective essay in floor planning has been evolved. A notable contribution in the plan is the generous area to the living room, dining room and court link, and the relationship established between these elements.

"As far as materials are concerned, the treatment of surfaces is illustrative of the values to be extracted from simplest materials, while creating a peculiarly South African character."
