From its site on the, slopes of Paarl mountain this house overlooks the valley from Wellington to the north to Fransch Hoek in the south-east. A long, thin awkwardly shaped site with difficult levels produced a poser for the architect, particularly after municipal regulations had pushed back the building line on each side.

Although hardly noticeable to the occupants, the house is built on six levels and the living room has a view to the north and south to suit the extreme climatic conditions and seasonal changes of the Paarl Valley. There is a pleasant link between the living room, the terrace and the lawn. To cater for frequent entertaining by the client, the lounge is of ample proportions with a lounge bar in the "Western" style at the one end.

A ranch-house atmosphere has been created for the owner who is an enthusiast of the Wild West. Wherever possible South African pine has been used to lend a rustic but pleasant effect contrasted with stonework in generous quantities.

No walls are built on the first floor and cupboards serve as space dividers and sound barriers.

A feature of the house is the many colours used to give bold contrasts appropriate to the business of the owner, Mr. Gordon Dick.

Well-placed flower boxes in the house, containing exotic plants and cacti, have made it possible to surround the building with lawns which add to the spaciousness by flowing into the level of the terrace and the living room.

A long roof, dictated by the slope of the site, is broken with an exposed section decorated with creepers.
