Click to view map Coordinates: | Rose Cottage was built before 1897 as a residence for Johannes Maboompi de Beer. Johannes Hendrik De Beer was originally from Queenstown [Komani] in the Eastern Cape. He came to the Transvaal in 1884 and to Pilgrim's Rest in 1894. De Beer was one of the leading citizens of Pilgrim's Rest in the early 1900s and was involved with various business ventures in the village; General Dealer Businesses, a Butcher Shop, owner of Desiré Mine and supplier of mining timber to the TGME. It is from this timber contract that De Beer got the nickname Maboompi. De Beer was the treasurer of the local freemason lodge and he was President of the Pilgrim's Rest Progressive Association. It was his main aim to get Pilgrim's Rest declared a township. He was married to Isabella Cornelia Muller, the daughter of Diederick Jan Muller. They had five children of whom one, Johan de Beer, is known to have planted the Jacaranda trees along the Pilgrim's Rest Main Street. (Rene Reinders. 2016:Item 11.
