The building, now named Halfway House, was erected as a residence in 1904 by Allan McCulloch who rented the stand until 1911. Between 1911 and 1913 the stand was rented by John Edgar, who in 1913 transferred the lease of the stand into the name of Simon Simonsen. Simonsen, who was employed by the TGME [Transvaal Gold Mining Estates] as a Carpenter, died in January 1921. After his death his wife, Isabella Theresa Simonsen, rented this stand until 1924. In 1924 Paul Ahlers built and opened the Central Garage in the Pilgrim's Rest Up Town. He bought the house from Ms Simonsen and rented the stand from 1924 until 1936. From 1936 until 1944 the stand was leased by Dr Theo Wassenaar, the District Surgeon who was stationed at Pilgrim's Rest from 1928 to 1951. In 1944 the lease of this stand was transferred into the name of Judith Marie Leonie Schmitz who owned Schmitz Garage, was situated in the building known as Alcock 's next to the Royal Hotel. The house on this stand is presently in use as an annex to the Royal Hotel and was named Halfway House. The original Halfway House was a canteen owned by William McCann and was situated near the Pilgrim's Creek in the 1870s.
