The stand on which this building was erected was initially leased by George Roy, the original owner of the Royal Hotel. In 1899 Rabie arrived in town as attorney connected to the firm of Rooth & Wessels. Carel Theodorus Rabie rented this building as his offices. From 1 November 1913 the building was utilised as a residence and the annual rent reduced from £12 per annum to £6 per annum. Theo Rabie left Pilgrim's Rest in 1914 and the lease of the stand was transferred into the name of Annie Paterson in 1919. From 1933 to 1936 Charlotte Augusta Solms rented the stand and from 1936 to 1957 the lease was registered in the name of the local Watchmaker, Solomon Feldman. Benjamin Herbert Ashton rented the stand from 1957 until his death in 1965 after which the lease was transferred into the name of Violet Ashton who rented the property until 1972.
