Click to view map Coordinates: | The Vanderbijlpark Estate Company (VESCO) was established in 1944 as a Section 21 Company "an association not for gain" to develop Vanderbijlpark as well as some of the surrounding townships. Several facilities were established by VESCO to complement the physical development of the community and these included the ISCOR Flats (now called Limpopo). It was accepted that the occupants of the flats would have as their primary possession, a car or motorbike and the proximity of a carport or parking bays to the flats would contribute to their success. The site planning was based on six separate flat blocks arranged as two groups of three blocks, on either side of a central east-west driveway with the driveway lined by covered carports on the south side and open parking bays on the north side. Each of the six flat blocks consisted of two separate flats on ground, first and second floors, arranged around a shared central staircase. The flats were arranged such that the living room and covered balcony on the northside was placed adjacent to the staircase and this arrangement was mirrored on the other side. The facades were carefully composed with tall vertical windows countered by groups of smaller windows in framed horizontal panels. The concrete floor structure was expressed on the facades as broad horizontal plaster bands framing bag-washed brick walls. Simple double pitched roofs with the ridge line offset towards the northside of each block, created asymmetrical end gables. The eaves and gable ends were clipped with no overhang.
