| Cape Town's first railway station was built by the Cape Town Dock & Railway Company, which constructed the first railway line (from Cape Town to Wellington) between 1859 and 1863. It stood on a vacant portion of the Grand Parade, next to the Commercial Exchange and opposite the Customs House. Contemporary photos show it to have been a rather plain single-storeyed building. The colonial government assumed responsibility for railways in 1873, and established the Cape Government Railways, which took over the railway company, its lines and stations, in 1875. The CGR replaced the Cape Town station with a much grander building [Railway Station - Second] a few years later, and this served as the terminus until the 1960s. (Arthur Radburn, December 2023) |
