House 3553 was designed in close dialogue with its landscape, where a mature Erythrina tree dictated the placement of the building and shaped a shaded outdoor living space beneath its canopy. The architecture responds sensitively to the garden, with a deck that extends over the planting and appears to hover lightly above it, creating a seamless transition between house and landscape. The garden itself is a celebration of the Garden Route’s unique ecology. Composed almost entirely of indigenous species, it thrives without permanent irrigation and offers year-round interest through a careful mix of textures, colours, and scents. Cone-bushes and other fynbos provide striking foliage colour, while flowering groundcovers add vibrancy. Many of the plants, such as Buchus and Wild rosemary, release fragrant oils, enriching the sensory experience of the space. A colourful planting palette also stabilises the embankment, ensuring ecological resilience while creating a visually dynamic backdrop for daily living. The result is a home and garden that belong together, and are deeply connected to the natural character of the Garden Route.
