Click to view large map Coordinates: | 30 miles south of De Aar, Deelfontein was primarily developed to service the railway due to its good water supply for steam locomotives. The hotel was situated across the road from the station. It served as accommodation and a gathering place for soldiers, officials, and civilians involved in the war. Later other buildings were erected next to the hotel: a bottle store (opened in 1935) and a general store (opened in 1938). Deelfontein itself was the site of the Imperial Yeomanry regiments' military hospital (1900) during the war. The hotel closed in c. 1980. More info on The Heritage Portal. |
