The station, located in the Western Cape on the Overberg branch line, was built as part of the railway extension from Somerset West over Sir Lowry's Pass. Construction started on July 12, 1899, by the Cape Government Railways, but the Anglo-Boer War delayed progress until the line opened to Caledon on August 1, 1902.
