This church was inaugurated on 12 January 1867. Also known as the "Voortrekkerkerkie". When the building became too small for the growing congregation, the second Gereformeerde Kerk was built nearby in 1896. This first church later housed the early physics laboratory of the Potchefstroom university. It is linked by means of a covered walkway to the adjacent Third Gereformeerde Kerk built in 1959.
