| After the battles of Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift, a Memorial Hall was erected in memory of the men of the Newcastle Mounted Rifles who were killed in these battles. The building had a very chequered career but when it was converted to a market hall and the public protested, the bronze plaque was removed and eventually erected on the pedestal of the Zulu War monument in front of the Town Hall. Before it was demolished in the 1950's it had served as Town Hall, Library, Market Hall and shelter for the Fire Engine (Anonymous, 1970s:13) References:
