UNIONDALE BOER WAR FORTS Following the occupation of Uniondale on 19th January 1901 by Commandant Gideon Scheepers and his commando of about 50 men, which was relieved by Lt-Col W.H. Williams and a force of British mounted infantry the following day. Four forts were hastily built between the 20th January and late January 1901 and were manned by a force of Town Guard made up of 150 volunteer members of the Uniondale community. On 22nd January 1901 the Scheepers commando was seen on a farm less than 10km from the town and hastily the garrison in each fort was doubled and additional water and ammunition was provided. Following a short engagement, the Boers withdrew when fire upon from the forts. These four little forts saw no additional hostilities and continued to protect the residents of Uniondale until the end of the war in May 1902. Further action in the district was seen in the vicinity of Avontuur where the Boers, once again under Commandant Scheepers and British troops of the 10th Hussars clashed in a skirmish on 18th August 1901.
