Radford (1979:178) notes Barry as the designer of the Riversdale Dutch Reformed Church (1838-45), 'his initials may be seen in the gable'. Gutsche (1970:76) states that Barry 'a good but opinionated churchman ... talked at length to Robert (Gray), particularly in regard to the needs of his people at Riversdale and Port Beaufort ... he wanted to build a church there and Robert gave him a plan. Lewcock (1963:444) states that WM Hopley was the designer.

The church was demolished in 1907 after an official farewell service. It was replaced by the new church built in 1908-9 on the same site.
