The first Roman Catholic church on the diamond fields was a tent church, Established at Dutoitspan in 1871 by Father Anatole Hidien. By 1872 there were some 3,000 Catholics in the area, mostly Irish, and in that year the first St Mary's, a corrugated iron structure, like most others in Kimberley, was built. Eight years later it was replaced by the second St Mary's.
