"Extensive re-organisation of an existing building, re-zoned and appended in such a way that a hall is provided and determined by the pattern of reorganisation, private dormitory spaces are shielded from the hall space at the upper level." (Righini 1977:52) The orphanage was established in 1911 and moved into its newly built accommodation in 1912. It was reclassified as "a home for children needing care" in 1985. The building was sold in 1991 and demolished two years later, and the extensive grounds were sold off as residential plots. The children had been moved to their new home in the suburb of Vredehoek. The establishment was renamed the Oranjia Jewish Child and Youth Centre in 2000.
